Team History - 2011

For RAVEN Robotics 2011 has been a year of growth and stability. This year we once again met at Francis Howell North High School with Mr. Krueger as our school sponsor, however, this year Mr. Stemmermann re-joined the team as a school sponsor after his leave in 2007. In addition to gaining Mr. Stemmermann as a mentor, we also gained two more mentors from Boeing: Tom Brandt and David Harmon, as well as Jon Faulkner coming back to the team as a college Mentor. The team also grew in size due to gaining new students from all the schools in our district. We became more organized than ever thanks to extra meetings and planning. Max Mulholand took over as student president, and David Chapman took over the vice presidency. Dana Faulkner, sister of John Faulkner, took the Secretary's position and Andrea kept her position as the Treasurer. Although the 2011 season is not over yet it has been a ton of fun and we hope to do well at the St.Louis Regional and the newly moved St. Louis Championship.
Team History - 2010

Once again our team, sponsored by Mr. Krueger, met at Francis Howell North to build a robot. We grew even more this year and once again became a larger team with a great FIRST presence. This year students re-elected for our president senior John Faulkner as president and again re-elected junior Max Mulholland as vice president, both of whom joined as freshman. At competition we placed in 11th place and had a blast.
Team History - 2009
In 2009 RAVEN Robotics benefited from a year without anything disrupting us, which lead to increased growth. We did freshman recruiting this year at all the high school, a first for us, which lead to bolstering our number of FIRST interested freshman. Jacob Fischer also cam back as a college mentor, having graduated in 2008. We ended up going to the St. Louis Regional again this year and finished in 14th place.
In addition to attending the St. Louis Regional as usual, we also went to the championships in Atlanta for the first time. It was an interesting and fun experience that truly shows how great FIRST is.
Team History - 2008

After a tough year in 2007, RAVEN Robotics picked itself up off the ground and grew and much as possible. Mr. Krueger, a principle from Francis Howell North High School, joined as an additional sponsor and helped get the team far more organized. With him he brought additional support from Francis Howell Central High School and we began meeting in the tech room and wood shop there. This was a huge step up from working out a library and our team showed. We gained students from Francis Howell North High School with their support and grew. We did well at the St. Louis Regional this year and were invited to the championship in Atlanta this year, but did not go. We also won the Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control this year for gyro-based steering at the St. Louis Regional. We ended up in 7th place at the end of the St. Louis Regional in 2008 so it was clear we were back on track.
Team History - 2007

2007 was a rough year for RAVEN Robotics. We lost our teachers sponsoring the team at Francis Howell North High School and in loosing their support we lost our facilities to build there. With the loss of sponsors and Francis Howell North High School, and much of the team in 2006 being seniors that graduated later that year RAVEN Robotics was left with few mentors and fewer students. Thankfully Mrs. Seznak stayed on as a sponsor and managed to get us room in the Francis Howell High School's library to build. In addition her hard work with the remaining students managed to bring in a large number of freshman, almost all exclusively from Francis Howell High School. By the time build season came around the team had shrunk from a great and large team in 2006, to a small struggling team in 2007.
Working out of Francis Howell High School's library was not an ideal setup; however the team weathered through it. We had to wheel out our tools and always clean up very well for the teachers and students. Working in a library also was difficult because we had to protect the carpeting by putting down tarps to work on. The library had nothing set up well to help build a robot like a wood shop would, and the team suffered in 2007 because of this. Most students had to put in more time for the team than they wanted because of the poor setup and shrunk team numbers. In the end we did manage to get a robot made and attended the STL Regional FIRST Robotics Competition just as we had in previous years and placed 16th.
Team History - 2006

2006 was a great year for RAVEN Robotics. This year we did even better than previous years. Build season was chaotic as usual. The team shifted from a normal sized club, to a large one with over 50 members, 15 or so showing up on a daily basis! We gained a new mentor Dave Fischer, the father of Jake Fischer, who is an engineer at Boeing. The team was very organized this year with smaller groups of people divided into sub-teams such as a construction group, programming group, and website group.
Team History - 2005

Having survived our first year in FIRST we ready and eager for more FIRST madness. Thanks to financial assistance via a grant from NASA, and the school district's repeated support we did very well financially. More students joined, this time from Francis Howell Central and Francis Howell High School in addition to Francis Howell North, bolstering our small one school club to a fully-functioning club. We placed 3rd at the STL Regional Competition, and were in 1st after semifinals.
We were very successful in seeding matches and were part of the top 8 seeds, even though stacking tetras proved to be much more difficult than we imagined. This meant we were allowed to pick alliance partners. Thankfully some students took notes on the other robots' performance, so we knew what teams would make good partners. This helped us pick a very good alliance. We made it to the semi finals this year. By now we really felt we had established ourselves as a team.
Team History - 2004

2004 was RAVEN Robotics’ first year. We were rookies in for a world of surprise that FIRST provided us. Originally RAVEN stood for Robotic Autonomous Vehicles Engineered at North, this is because we met Francis Howell North and the club was comprised of students only from Francis Howell North despite being the Francis Howell School District's FIRST robotics team. The club was founded by parent Steve Finkes, FIRST Veteran Tom Mantia, Boeing Engineer Lou Pape & parent Steve Kunkee. Because it was our first year we had only about 10 active students; however they were dedicated and sucked into FIRST Robotics immediately. We ended up placing 16th at the STL Regional Competition. We received “Highest Rookie Seed Award” and were quite proud.
